Looking Back on the 79th Little League World Series

Now that the Little League World Series (LLWS) has come and gone I wanted to take a moment to recognize some of the special moments. We can agree that some of the highlights this year include Curaçao’s pitching domination in the final game, Japan’s heartfelt celebration after winning their final matchup with help from their smallest player. There was also the record-setting play of both “girls with game,” Kinley Rasmus of Phenix City, Alabama, and Carsynn Meyer of Paseo Verde Little League in Las Vegas, Nevada.

One of my favorite moments of the series didn’t even occur on the diamond, but on the slick, muddy hill. I watched the kids slide down, run back up, and slide back down; a frenzy of kids caked in mud having fun. But when the speakers began to play a national anthem, whether it was the Star-Spangled Banner or another country’s anthem, they stopped in deference to the tradition. I was proud to witness such respect, and it affirms that, yes, the kids are alright.

This year I volunteered as Team Host for Team Canada, and I saw and experienced kindness, respect, great sportsmanship, and commendable behavior in the Canadians and all the teams who came to play on our fields. I’m left feeling encouraged and hopeful.

I also want to congratulate the brave and determined players of the Challenger Exhibition game held on Saturday. It is possibly the most joyful game of the Series, when the kids who face physical and developmental challenges take to the field, swing the bat and run the bases. This year’s teams hailed from Berwyn/Paoli, Pennsylvania, and Oakley, California. Before the players met at Volunteer Stadium, they practiced at the Original Little League Field in Williamsport, and they participated in a program called Drums Alive with the Superstars group at the Williamsport YMCA. Many thanks to the Superstars, the Williamsport YMCA, BLaST IU17, Park Pizza for donating pizzas to both teams, PepsiCo, and especially the families for supporting their kids on the long journey to Williamsport.

Lastly, I want to take a moment to congratulate all of us, as fans and as hosts. The Little League World Series is our time to show the world that North Central Pennsylvania, the 83rd District, South Williamsport, Williamsport, and the surrounding communities are great places to live, populated with good and welcoming people. I believe we rose to that occasion yet again. Thank you for collectively coming together to make the 79th Little League World Series a success.
